Thursday Thirteen (25th)
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WAR OFFICE
Dept. of the Army Regulations For Operation Of Aircraft Commencing January 1920
There were 25 regulations.I picked out 13 because, well, because this is Thursday Thirteen!
1. Don't take the machine into the air unless you are satisfied it will fly.
2. Never leave the ground with the motor leaking.
3. Don't turn sharply when taxiing. Instead of turning sharp, have someone lift the tail around.
4. Never get out of the machine with the motor running until the pilot relieving you can reach the motor controls.
5. Pilots should carry hankies in a handy place to wipe off goggles.
6. In case the engine fails on takeoff, land straight ahead regardless of obstacles.
7. No machine must taxi faster than a man can walk.
8. Learn to gauge altitude, especially on landing.
9. If you see another machine near you, get out of the way.
10. Do not trust altitude instruments.
11. Before you begin a landing glide, see that no machines are under you.
12. Hedge-hopping will not be tolerated.
13. Do not use aeronautical gasoline in cars or motorcycles.
Bonus:
If an emergency occurs while flying, land as soon as possible.

Gosh, I would think that #1 would be self evident. Are these still the regulations?? I love "in case the engine fall off...." WTF?!? The ENGINE fell off! lol!
Happy TT Raggedy!
Have a great Thursday! Nice list by the way! Please stop by my blog if you can!
DEB
Thanks for stopping by! Happy early birthday. My niece will be 5 on the 18th! :) I hope you have a wonderful birthday.
Happy TT.
Great list, by the way. ;)
Yikes, my engine is leaking. What should I do? *giggles* Happy TT!
Have a great day!
I read your post to my son in the Air Force. We had a good laugh.
Thanks for visiting Miller Manor! And, Happy TT!
TM
Liked "hankies and hedge-hopping"!
Thank goodness aeronautics have come a long way since then! Though sometimes I wonder. . .
They seem so simplistic. I just want to say "DUH!!"
Have a nice weekend. No's six and seven are the best ever!
Stay cool and land straight ahead regardless of obstacles.
..
Wow, can't believe how obvious some of them are! LOL!
Great list! Happy TT!
Ha! Maybe "Catch 22" wasn't quite as inspired as I thought. This could come right out of Heller.
As Mr Orr said of another pilot, "How can he see he's got flies in his eyes if he's got flies in his eyes?"
What a hilarious list. "In an emergency, try to land."
I wonder how many regulations there are today!
Oh my gosh. You had my laughing so hard. I can't believe those rules truly exist. Were they really that naive about flying back then?! It was just hilarious.
I was laughing the hardest at 6, 9, 10 and the bonus.
That was a great list. Thank you for the laugh I needed it.
Thank for stopping by my blog too. Now have a great TT!
Great list. I really enjoyed it. Happy TT.
Hi! I am glad that I could say hi to you today. Nice list.
Take care.
LOL. so was it the times that were simpler in those days? or the technology? or the minds?
happy TT.
thanx for visiting
Some of those are pretty odd. Cool TT.
This is a GOOD list. Serious stuff, and all that...but when I read the first one, up until the 4th one, I then started picturing in my head a Daffy Duck/Bugs Bunny cartoon. LOL....this would be good material for a cartoon. Okay, sorry, but that was running through my head.
Have a very nice weekend!!! It was a great list!!!
:)
Many of those seem pretty obvious. LOL!
Happy TT!
Love number 5! That's a regulation I try to adhere to as well. You never know when a packet of hankies will come in useful!
Great list ! Serious stuff... I like it ! :-)
Happy T13
<3
This is so funny. Where did we find it? Are the other 12 rules as good?
Thanks for stopping by and commenting on 2littlemonkeys.
What a hoot! Of course, I guess at the time it was helpful information. But, today it made me smile!
Thanks for stopping by my T13.
Thanks for a very informative TT. I love the last one, land as soon as possible if you have a problem. Duh!
These guys were definitely flying simpler machine in simpler times.
Great list.
Happy TT
My husband, the pilot, would LOVE this list!! Very cool!!
I believe that first ones a keeper!!!
Thank you for dropping by my TT-13 - actually being my very first visitor this week!
Ha, ha - funny list. I like #12. No hedge hopping. Why?

Number six made me laugh.
Nice list. Some of those are kind of common sense.
Interesting Thursday Thirteen. I wish I could come up with interesting lists like this.
Hmm, learn something new everyday. "The plane, boss the plane."
Seems like one would use common sense...Great list! Happy TT!
hmmm, it seems sad when you have to notate common sense! LOL
#8 is great!
happy tt!
Scary that they need to come out and state all that, huh?
Sometimes, I wish we lived in a better world, where common sense reigned.
Happy TT!
Self evident, yes, but you can't drill the basics in too much! Here’s a great story about an emergency landing.
What a great list!
You've left me with a smile - THANKS!
Happy TT
Great post! Some of these seem like common sense but ???
Wow, some of those are scary.
I mean, aren't they common sense?
If they had to be made into regulations you know someone had already tried them and failed at them first! LOL!
Thanks for dropping by my place earlier!
These are some very basic rules to know. Very funny. Happy TT!
LOL! These definitely sound like military regulations--stating the obvious--or what you'd HOPE would be obvious!
Thanks for stopping by:) Great lsit you have here too!!
It is amazing to so how much progress has ben made. Great List. Very interesting. Happy TT
Fun list! I'm glad that airplanes have advanced significantly since that time!
Sounds so simple-I wonder how the regulations today are worded
Thanks for stopping by my blog

This is too cool! You are so funny, and love your list. I am new at this whole thing, so I hope I am doing this right!! I put my name and url in the black and entered. It that right?

Happy TT! Wonderful list! :)Thanks for stopping by mine.
I'll share those with my husband! Too funny.
#6 is pretty damn scary!
Well that sounds easy enough;) Great list!
Those are great. I really liked the Bonus and # 7.
Ralph
All right, I won't hedge hop, especially now that I know the government is watching.
Does it really say "hankies"? You would think they would have some high level special technical lingo for that.
LOL on the hankies. Today they would be called eye- and nose-liquid removal devices!
Fun list, and Happy TT!
Happy Thanksgiving, too!
LOL This is a great list! I have to say ... #1 seems pretty obvious! As does the bonus! :) Happy TT!
i must say i am in total agreement with #1 lol
happy tt!
Those are some very important rules. I follow many of them myself when I go out in my stroller.
Love this list...some times I wonder if we've come very far at all.
Wow..interesting list...some of them you just want to say DUH!!!lol...Happy TT and thanks for stopping by:)
Great list, and good tips!
Happy TT~

Interesting list. I especially like the bonus one. LOL!
I love the last one!! Bwaahahaa!!!
All of those cracked me up, but the "if your engine fails, land" that is hysterical.
ROFLMAO Most of those sound like common sense rules to me. ;) Thanks for sharing.
Funny stuff!
Interesting list :)
Nr 10: do not trust altitude instruments is my favorite...help! I am flying tomorrow! hope the pilot knows the rules, lol
Happy thirteening!
Yikes! Happy TT to you...
These seem so common sense they make me smile...Now there are probably pages and pages of documents telling pilots to do exactly the same thing! Hurrah for simplicity!
Hahahahahahahahaha! LMAO!
nuff said!
Happy TT! Greets Julia
no hedge hopping...awww
Thanks for stopping by. Blessings!
Neat list!
Great post! I work at an aviation history museum, so these were especially great for me.
Thanks for visiting... Happy TT!
I love those. They're a fascinating look into something that's been all but forgotten.
Do you take off your hand from the direction stick when wipping you goggles??
Neat list! I agree with babystepper's comment
The rule about hankies is cute, too :)
Great list, especially since I have seen the SOP manuals now.
thanks for visiting my TT. BTW, that test is from a book called Personality Plus, Understand-Understanding,Yourself
Wow that was hilarious! I especially liked number one! I think I will take that into consideration if I ever fly a plane. :D
That's a neat list! Thanks for stopping by my blog!
umm common sence for those who fly.
have a great week my friend.God bless..
Some really good ones. I particularly like #1.
Great TT :-)
Makes sense to me!
My gosh...you have over 80 visitors...how do you possobly get back around to visit them all in return? You are a blogging animal!
Cheers thansk for visiting my TT list.
What a low-tech approach! Thanks for an interesting TT (and thanks for visiting mine)
Are you a pilot blogger going for the record on comments?!
Some of these sound like common sense. I guess since the airplane was still relatively new, things that seem obvious to us today wasn't to people back then.
hahahaha, aren't some of these no brainers?? nice list!!
Hmmm. I better not let the ol man read this list lol aeronautical gasoline in motorcycles,he'd be wanting to try that one LOL
Happy T13!
It's as technical as it is supposed to be instinctive!!
Thanks for dropping by my TT!
Isn't amazing how they have to state the obvious in the rule book? And you know its because there are people who need it clearly stated because it just isn't obvious to them!
Thanks for visiting my TT today!

Hmmm..I didn't know these..
Thanks for stopping by my T-13..
My husband and I both come from Air Force families. I very much enjoyed your list.
My list is up too.
Don't laugh, but looking at #2 and thinking about the Hawker Hurricanes of WWII... if you DIDN'T find a puddle of oil on the ground beneath the engine, THEN something was wrong! (I kid you not!)
...but I do promise, should an emergency occur, I WILL land as soon as possible!
Next time I crank up Flivver, I'll add that to the normal checklist ;)
LOL, LOL...These are pretty Hilarious, Raggedy Dear....I cannot imagine what the other 11 or 12 are like.
Sorry I haven't been by...I have no excuse except I have been trying to clean out some very nasty areas in my Garage and house...And at the end of the day...I Am Tired! (lol)
Some of those are unbelievable - scary that they were considered necessary to include in a list of rules!!! Too funny!
I enjoyed your list esp #6. I didn't know that those rules could be pretty scary. Happy TT!
Hmmmmmm, now does this list sound like a lot of common sense or what?!!!?? Great idea for a TT!
Just returning a visit to my site; have a great weekend!
Great list! Glad that someone thinks about these things!
How neat :0)
Thanks for visiting my TT. Pleased to meet you!

My favorite:
'Never get out of the machine with the motor running until the pilot relieving you can reach the motor controls.'

#1 should be the modified regulation for every vehicle. "If you don't think it'll get ou where you're going, don't take it out of the hanger/driveway/lot..."
Thanks for coming by :)
Hope it was a Happy Thursday.
~X
LOL. what a funny list. thanks for visiting me this week!
This is a cool list idea! I had no idea of any of these before. Happy belated TT and thank you so much for stopping by!
Whoa, I never realized how brave or crazy the pilots were back then. I don't think I would have wanted to fly back then.
Great list.
Ed
Very interesting list. I really enjoyed it. Happy TT.
Happy Early Birthday!! :)
Does this still count?? Some seem so obvious...
Thanks for visiting my black panther TT!
Wow. I suppose there are rules for everything but I'm always surprised to read about specifics for things I'd never think of. Great 13! Thanks for checking out mine last week. I'm still catching up.
